Last week, the children stayed at home because classes were suspended due to the heavy rains. Every morning, when I arrived at work, I was welcomed with hugs and smiles, but one child in particular ran down the hall towards me with open arms. Don’t you think it’s nice to be welcomed that way when you come to work?  Pinto was the one who greeted me so warmly each morning, and he is 19 years old. Actually, he is not a child anymore; he is a young man, but his heart is like a child. Pinto came to La Casa when he was 10 years old, and he was diagnosed with mild mental retardation and language delays. Gerardo, the house dad for the boy’s home, says, “When Pinto came to us, he could not hear in either ear.  A doctor donated hearing aids, but one day he removed them and told us that he could hear!  Pinto assures us that God performed a miracle.”

For some time now, I have felt a desire in my heart to share with you about how Pinto has ministered to me. Pinto makes us laugh as he is always joking, yet he has a servant’s heart. He is someone that is so special to us that you can’t help but notice him. If someday you have the opportunity to visit La Casa, you’ll recognize him right away because he has the unique ability to make you feel very welcome.

 I recently had the opportunity to visit Pinto’s hometown. At La Casa we have the desire to foster communication between our children and their families.  This allows our children to have a deeper understanding of their family roots and who they are.  On this day, Pinto and his brother were extremely happy.  They had the opportunity to see their mother, aunts, and cousins.  This visit showed me the immense love that God has for Pinto and his brother.  The people in the community were amazed at how much they had grown and matured.  One of the neighbors shared with us that Pinto’s brother did not learn how to walk until he was 6 years old. They said that Pinto couldn’t hear or talk; he only communicated with signs.  Now, Pinto is receiving speech therapy two afternoons each week.  It was evident during the visit that Pinto is now better able to communicate with his family and neighbors.

For several days after this visit, Pinto asked me prices of windows, bricks, pots, and dishes. He told me that he wanted to work at a bakery to help his family and the children of his community. He is currently taking baking classes at school. I was very impressed with how Pinto recognized the needs of his family and his community. He has the gift of using his strengths to serve and care for others. His enthusiasm and faithful life is a great example to us all. Sometimes God speaks to us through the humble. We have so many blessings, talents, and abilities, and yet we don’t always use them to help or support others.

This experience with Pinto has caused me to stop and reflect.  I have asked God, “Father, what might your plans be for Pinto?”  My heart has been touched as the Lord led me to His word in Isaiah 35: 5-6.  “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.” Tears sprang from my eyes as I began to see that our Heavenly Father plants people in our lives to reflect Him.  God has made each and everyone of us unique and special.  We are all His creation. Pinto blesses my life!

Maravillosas son tus obras

Durante los días de lluvia los niños estuvieron en La Casa porque las clases se suspendieron. Cada mañana, al llegar al trabajo los niños me daban la bienvenida con sonrisas y abrazos, pero un niño en particular corría por todo el pasillo y me recibía con los brazos abiertos. ¡Qué lindo es llegar a tu trabajo y ser recibido así! ¿No creen? Este niño, se llama Francisco Pinto y tiene 19 años, en realidad ya es un joven mayor de edad, pero tiene el corazón de un niño. Pinto llegó a la fundación cuando tenía 10 años de edad y fue diagnosticado con retraso mental leve y discapacidad del habla y lenguaje. Gerardo, Padre de Hogar de la casa de varones nos cuenta: “Cuando Pinto era niño no podía escuchar en ambos oídos, un doctor le donó aparatos de audición, pero un día él se los quito y les dijo a todos que ya podía escuchar. Pinto está seguro que Dios lo sano”

vida en estos días. Pinto nos hace reír, siempre anda haciendo bromas y además es muy servicial. Una persona tan especial para nosotros no puede pasar desapercibido. Si usted visita La Casa en alguna oportunidad lo identificará rápidamente, ya que él tiene la capacidad tan única de hacerlo sentir bienvenido.

Hace poco tuve la oportunidad de visitar el lugar donde nació Pinto. En La Casa, tenemos el deseo de fortalecer la  comunicación entre los niños y sus familias, esto  les permite conocer su procedencia y facilitarles el desarrollo de su identidad. Ese día Pinto y su hermano estaban tremendamente felices, tuvieron la oportunidad de ver a su mamá, tías y primos. Esta visita me mostró el inmenso amor de Dios para Pinto y su hermano. Las personas en la comunidad estaban impresionadas al verlos grandes y fuertes. Una de las vecinas, nos compartió que el hermano de Pinto aprendió a caminar hasta los seis años y que Pinto no escuchaba y solo se comunicaba por señas. Ahora Pinto esta recibiendo terapias de lenguaje dos tardes por semana. Es evidente como Pinto ha mejorado su comunicación con sus familiares y amigos.

Los días siguientes luego de esta visita, Pinto me pregunto precios de ventanas, ladrillos, cacerolas y platos, me dijo que él quería trabajar en panadería para darle a su familia y a los niños de su comunidad lo que necesitan. Él recibe clases de panadería en su escuela. Me impresiona como Pinto identificó las necesidades de su familia y su comunidad, su entusiasmo y su fe por la vida nos da un gran ejemplo. Muchas veces Dios nos habla a través de personas sencillas y menos esperadas. Nosotros tenemos tantas bendiciones, talentos y habilidades y muchas veces no las ponemos al servicio de los demás.

Además, esta convivencia con Pinto me hizo reflexionar y le pregunte a Dios: “¿Padre cuáles son tus planes para Pinto? Mi corazón se quebranto cuando el Señor me llevo a su Palabra en  Isaías 35:5 “Se abrirán entonces los ojos de los ciegos y se destaparán los oídos de los sordos; saltará el cojo como un ciervo, y gritará de alegría la lengua del mudo. Porque aguas brotarán en el desierto, y torrentes en el sequedal.” Lágrimas brotaron de mis ojos al ver que nuestro Señor planta personas en nuestras vidas para hacernos reflexionar en Él. Dios nos ha hecho a cada uno de nosotros únicos y especiales. Todos somos su creación. ¡Pinto ha bendecido mi vida!

“¡Te alabo porque soy una creación admirable!¡Tus obras son maravillosas, y esto lo sé muy bien! Mis huesos no te fueron desconocidos cuando en lo más recóndito era yo formado, cuando en lo más profundo de la tierra era yo entretejido.”  Salmos 139:14-15 (NVI)
