There’s something so beautiful about children worshiping God together. In the words of an old praise song, “There’s just something so beautiful about His name.” I would definitely agree, but I also find there to be something very beautiful in children of all ages coming together to worship the Lord. Over the last 2 weeks during my times of filling in as a Tía, I have had several opportunities to be with the children in worship. Every Friday evening, the Tíos bring the children together on the front porch for worship and devotions, divided up by age groups. The worship team is usually comprised of various youth and a Tío. The other week, I shared with the middle group an illustration from one of my favorite stories: Tales of the Kingdom: Princess Amanda and the Dragon. We talked about how little things can grow into big things of which we can quickly lose control, as well as Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I have encountered some moments when the children sing at inopportune times. The other day, as I was trying to correct one of the youngest girls for how she had treated another one of the girls, qhen she decided to run up the stairs singing about how God is worthy as opposed to listening. I then tried to explain to her how God is not pleased when we sing praises to Him and disobey at the same time. Eventually she settled down and we were able to get to the impending discussion.
After covering as a Tía several times over the past week, I have a renewed appreciation for the Tíos here. Not only do they have to give very early wake-up calls (usually the first children get up around 3:30AM), but bed-time comes late for them as they wrap up their many responsibilities. Discipline is a large part of the day and so creativity, wisdom, and patience are all important characteristics for the Tíos. And, as I have been reading, discipline is not just about correcting behavior but rather about getting to the heart, seeing what is there and helping to mold the heart to follow after God. The work of a Tío never really finishes, even when they have their days off; just like parents, they are praying for their children and most likely wondering how they are doing back at La Casa. I have been reminded of how important it is to cover the lives of the Tíos with prayer because they are often under attack, and things like tiredness or sickness greatly increase the difficulty of their work. I can definitely say that I am thankful for them and admire their frontline work with the children.

Hay algo tan hermoso cuando los niños alaban a Dios juntos. Una antigua canción de alabanza contiene las palabras, “Hay algo tan hermoso de Su nombre.” Definitivamente estoy de acuerdo, pero también encuentro algo muy especial en el hecho de ver a los niños de cualquier edad uniéndose para adorar al Señor. Por las dos últimas semanas durante mi tiempo de ser Tía en La Casa, he tenido algunas oportunidades de estar con los niños en alabanza. Cada viernes por la noche, los Tíos traen a los niños, divididos en grupos según su edad, a la cochera de la casa para tener su devocional. El grupo de alabanza esta conformado normalmente por varios adolescentes y un Tío. Hace algunas semanas compartí con los niños medianos, usando una ilustración de uno de mis cuentos favoritos: Cuentos del Reino: La Princesa Amanda y el Dragón (Tales of the Kingdom: Princess Amanda and the Dragon). Hablamos sobre cómo las pequeñas cosas en la vida pueden volverse grandes y salirse de nuestro control. También hablamos sobre Mateo 6:21 cuando Jesús dice: “Por donde esté tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón.”

Me he encontrado en momentos cuando los niños están cantando en momentos inoportunos. El otro día estaba tratando de corregir a una de las niñas pequeñas por su comportamiento hacia otra niña, pero decidió subir las escaleras cantando de que Dios es digno en vez de escucharme. Entonces traté de explicarle que a Dios no le gusta cuando le cantamos a Él mientras desobedecemos. Por fin, se calmó y empezamos la conversación que dejamos a medias.
Después de cubrir como Tía esos días, ahora tengo un renovado aprecio por los Tíos aquí. No sólo tienen que despertarse temprano (ya que algunos de los niños se levantan a las 3:30 en la madrugada), pero no pueden acostarse hasta tarde por las responsabilidades que tienen. La disciplina es una gran parte del día, así que la creatividad, la sabiduría y la paciencia son importantes características de los Tíos. Y como he leído, la disciplina no sólo se trata de corregir el comportamiento, sino también de alcanzar al corazón para ver lo que verdaderamente está allí y guiarlo en el camino de Dios. El trabajo del Tío nunca termina, aun cuando tienen sus días libres; igual que los padres, están orando por los niños y pensando en ellos. Me recordé de cuán importante es cubrir las vidas de los Tíos en oración, porque muchas veces son atacados por el cansancio, la enfermedad y otras cosas que añaden a la dificultad de su trabajo. Definitivamente puedo decir que estoy agradecida por ellos y les admiro por su trabajo con los niños.
