Have you ever worked on a project, but never saw the end result? Have you ever had to trust your efforts into the hands of others? Over the summer months, we had an ongoing project on our farm, the addition of a new playing field, this time basketball, thanks to several youth groups who were willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears to make it all come together. None of the four teams ever crossed paths physically, but each left a trail of accomplished work for the next group to build upon.
The project began in June when en energetic, focused team from Faithbridge Church out of Houston, Texas took on the task of clearing and leveling virgin tropical land. They spent their work days with shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and one small weed-eater. They were not about to “come down off their wall”, as they related their task to their study of Nehemiah. And, yes indeed, they left us with just the perfect place to put a concrete court.
For the next several weeks, a youth group from Fourth Presbyterian Church out of Maryland and two youth group teams from North Point Community Church out of Atlanta, Georgia began the next grueling phase of mixing and pouring concrete. Loads of sand and gravel had to be moved from one area of the farm to the worksite. Forms had to be built to section off the court for each day’s pouring. At first, everyone was so excited when we were loaned a small portable cement mixer…that is until it had its own mind of when it would work. and rest. Anyone who knows that once you start pouring concrete, you can’t just quit at any moment, so the teams learned real quick that the mixture for concrete was four buckets of sand, two buckets of gravel, one bucket of water, and half a bag of concrete…..all mixed by hand. But, these teams had the energy and determination to do their part, leaving with just the posts and backboards to be set in place.
This past Saturday, our boys and girls were able to initiate the basketball court. A whole summer of teams, memories, and back breaking labor has provided another place for our children to exert and focus energy in a positive way. Thanks to each group, volunteer and our on-the-grounds coordinator, Dave, for exhausting days, sore muscles, and plenty of mosquito bites as this project unfolded. Our kids love it!
Trabajo en equipo
Has trabajado en un proyecto pero nunca ves los resultados? Has tenido que confiar tus esfuerzos a otros? Es estos meses de verano hemos estado trabajando en un proyecto en La Finca, una cancha, esta vez de basquetbol, gracias a varios de los grupos de jóvenes que pusieron todo su esfuerzo, sangre, sudor y lágrimas para poder lograrlo. Ninguno de los grupos trabajó físicamente con el otro pero cada uno dejó un avance para que el siguiente grupo continuara.
El proyecto comenzó en Junio con el Grupo de Faithbridge que vino de Houston, lleno de energía. Texas tuvo la responsabilidad de limpiar y nivelar el terreno. Pasaron sus días de trabajo con palas, rastrillos, carretillas, y un pequeño comedor elaborado con ramas. Ellos no estaban dispuestos a “desmayar en su trabajo”, haciendo referencia a su trabajo con el estudio de Nehemías. Y, sí, por supuesto, nos dejaron el lugar perfecto para poner el concreto para la cancha.
Durante las próximas semanas, un grupo de jóvenes de la Fourth Presbyterian Church de Maryland y dos equipos del grupo de jóvenes de North Point Community Church de Atlanta, Georgia iniciaron la siguiente fase agotadora de mezclar y verter el concreto. Había montones de arena y grava que se habían movido de un área de La Finca a la obra. La cancha se dividió en secciones para poder facilitar el trabajo. Para todos fue una emoción enorme cuando se prestó una pequeña mezcladora de cemento portátil, hasta el momento en que se le ocurrió dejar de trabajar. Cualquier persona sabe que una vez que comience vertido de concreto, se debe continuar así que los miembros del grupo aprendieron rápidamente que la mezcla de concreto es de cuatro cubetas de arena, dos cubetas de grava, una cubeta de agua, y media bolsa de cemento… todo mezclado a mano. Sin embargo, estos equipos tenían la energía y determinación para hacer su parte, quedando sólo pendientes los postes y tableros.
El pasado sábado, los niños y niñas inauguraron oficialmente la cancha de baloncesto. Todo un verano de trabajo de los grupos, los recuerdos y trabajo arduo ha proporcionado otro lugar para nuestros chicos para ejercitarse y enfocar la energía de una manera positiva. Gracias a cada grupo, los voluntarios y nuestro coordinador en el proyecto, Dave, por esos días agotadores, de dolores musculares, y un montón de picaduras de mosquitos. A los chicos les encanta!
