When I began serving in La Casa de mi Padre in 2006, I asked some of the kids what they aspired to be when they grew up. One girl said that she had never thought about it before and the rest of the other children did not have an answer. Impacted by their responses, I began looking into vocational opportunities for our teenagers, and God opened the door at a technical university called ITCA.
ITCA trains our teenagers in different areas that can open doors for a better future / ITCA capacita a nuestros adolescentes en diferente áreas que pueden abrir puertas a un futuro mejor.
We established a “win/win” relationship, where ITCA would offer 5 scholarships to our teenagers and I would give value talks to their student body. The first year was such a success that the following year the director decided to increase the number of scholarships to 8, and my value talks became a graduation prerequisite for all first year ITCA students around the country. Most of our teenagers have decided to study English, although many have also participated in cooking and computer courses.
Three of our girls have already graduated from ITCA with an advanced level of English and serve as translators for missions teams that yearly come through La Casa.

This experience has also taught them important life skills, as they take the bus alone to ITCA each Saturday, register for classes, purchase books and manage their bus fare and small allowance without adult assistance. The most gratifying part of this program is seeing the change in the teenagers. They now have big dreams about when they want God to do in and through them. The girl, who first said she had never thought before of what she wanted to be when she grew up, is currently in the process of selection for what could be her first job as a bilingual telemarketer at a call center. She will be resuming her university studies in January and working part time. Another boy will be graduating from high school in November and will be enrolling in a Christian college next year to become a praise and worship pastor. Others have mentioned that they want to become a chef, airline stewardess, lawyer, English teacher, etc. I am convinced that God will use our kids to change El Salvador! What a privilege to be a part of God’s growth in their lives!

Proveyendo oportunidades para el futuro

Cuando commence a trabajar en La Casa de mi Padre en el 2006, le pregunté a algunos niños qué les gustaría ser cuando fueran grandes. Una niña me dijo que nunca había pensado en eso antes y la mayoría de los otros niños no supieron qué decir. Impresionada por sus respuestas, empecé a buscar oportunidades vocacionales para nuestros adolescentes, y Dios abrió una puerta en un instituto técnico llamado ITCA.

Establecimos una relación ganar-ganar en la cual el ITCA nos ofrecería 5 becas para nuestros chicos a cambio de que yo impartiera charlas sobre valores a todos sus estudiantes. Tuvimos tanto éxito con esta iniciativa el primer año que el Director del centro decidió aumentar a 8 las becas ofrecidas, y las charlas que impartial se convirtieron en un pre-requisito para todos los estudiantes de primer año en los ITCA de todo el país. La mayoría de nuestros adolescentes ha decidido estudiar Inglés, y otros han tomado cursos de cocina y computación. Tres de nuestras chicas ya se han graduado con un nivel avanzado de Inglés, e incluso nos ayudan como traductoras para los grupos misioneros que nos visitan anualmente. Esta experiencia también les ha enseñado algunas habilidades importantes para la vida diaria, como tomar el transporte público para llegar a sus clases, registrarse ellos mismos, comprar sus libros y manejar su dinero para el bus y una pequeña cuota para gastos, ésto sin la ayuda de ningún adulto. La parte más gratificante de este programa es ver el cambio en los adolescentes. Ahora tienen grandes sueños de lo que Dios quiere hacer en ellos y a través de ellos.

La niña que un día dijo que nunca había pensado qué quería ser cuando creciera, está actualmente en un proceso de selección para su primer trabajo en un call center que maneja cuentas internacionales y donde tener un buen nivel de Inglés es un requisito para aplicar. Ella retomará sus estudios universitarios en enero y tendrá la oportunidad de trabajar a medio tiempo. Otro de nuestros adolescentes se graduará de Bachiller en noviembre y se inscribirá en un instituto Cristiano el próximo año para convertirse en un pastor de alabanza y adoración. Otros muchachos han mencionado que desean ser chefs, aeromozas, abogados, maestros de Inglés, etc. ¡Estoy convencida que Dios usará a nuestros niños para cambiar El Salvador! ¡Qué privilegio ser parte del crecimiento de Dios en sus vidas!
