Did you know that the 3rd, 5th and 6th of August are vacation days for us here in San Salvador? The 3rd is a day where commerce workers are recognized for their services. The 5th and 6th are days that honor Jesus, the saint for the the city of San Salvador. Most schools close for an entire week around these celebrations. And this means, we have houses full of energetic children and adolescents on break.
These are days when we don’t have to focus on questions like, “What do you have for homework today?” or “Really, can I check your agenda?” or “Did you know you needed that poster board yesterday?” Yes, those all be part of an afternoon when the children are in school. Vacation days allow a break in all of the questioning and expectations.
This year, we had some children under our care who could not be out and about the country due to specific security reasons with their placement, so we had a week of fun on the farm. Small swimming pools, sprinklers, days for teenagers to sleep in, cookouts….time to enjoy each other and life.
And, we hosted a team from My Father’s House International. It wasn’t a normal team. This tram was a combination of teams joining together…. with multiple talents, and it was fun seeing how they all were used.
A group of high school students who have already established a foundation called Project 410shared with us their enthusiasm for sports. We played soccer, volleyball, badminton, baseball, water games and shared so many laughs and fun together. No one said they were bored one time at for those two days! This group of high school students raised money to bring down lots of sports equipment and left it for the homes to use. Sports are an excellent way to share time together and grow together! And it was encouraging to see a group of young people focusing on how they could use their talents to impact the world.
During the time the kids were all playing and having a blast, three individuals on the team who worked in the field of counseling met with our houseparents, listened to their hearts, their struggles, their real life and prayed with them. Encouraging moments that we all need!
This team then quickly switched gears and focus and began to prepare for a medical clinic day as an outreach to the community around our farm. Several on the team were doctors or worked in the medical field; some of them being faithful friends for years. They visited homes and got to meet many of our neighbors before they ever saw them in the clinic. Then they partnered with a local dentist and doctor to see almost 200 of our neighbors, attending to medical needs, dental needs and vision in one day. What a joy it was to see our neighbors interacting with doctors who have poured into them and got to know over the years they have been coming!
And those high school student? They jumped right in and help direct people, count our vitamins, play with children and do anything they were asked to do to help out. And those counselors and pastor? Listening to stories that people shared and praying with them. What a beautiful example of how we can all come together, brining glory to God, pointing to Him!
I’d say that was a successful vacation! Thanks to MFHI, Project 410 and and Radius Church from South Carolina who gave up a week of their life and poured into ours. We hope you were blessed as well!
¿Sabías que los días 3, 5 y 6 de agosto son días de vacaciones para nosotros aquí en San Salvador? El día 3 es un día donde los trabajadores del comercio son reconocidos por sus servicios. Los días 5 y 6 son días que honran a Jesús, el santo de la ciudad de San Salvador. La mayoría de las escuelas cierran durante una semana entera alrededor de estas celebraciones. Y esto significa que tenemos casas llenas de niños y adolescentes enérgicos en descanso.
Estos son días en los que no tenemos que centrarnos en preguntas como: “¿Qué tienes hoy para hacer los deberes?” o “¿En serio, puedo revisar tu agenda?” o “¿Sabías que necesitabas ese cartel ayer?” Sí, todos ellos serán parte de una tarde cuando los niños estén en la escuela. Los días de vacaciones permiten una pausa en todas las preguntas y expectativas.
Este año, tuvimos algunos niños bajo nuestro cuidado que no podían estar fuera debido a razones específicas de seguridad, así que tuvimos una semana de diversión en la finca. Piscinas pequeñas, aspersores, días para que los adolescentes duerman, comidas al aire libre….tiempo para disfrutar el uno del otro y de la vida.
Y, recibimos a un equipo de My Father’s House International. No era un grupo normal. Era una combinación de equipos que se unían…. con múltiples talentos, y fue divertido ver cómo los usaban todos ellos.
Un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria que ya han establecido una fundación llamada Proyecto 410 compartieron con nosotros su entusiasmo por los deportes. Jugamos fútbol, voleibol, bádminton, béisbol, juegos acuáticos y compartimos muchas risas y diversión juntos. Nadie se aburrió durante esos dos días! Este grupo de estudiantes de secundaria recaudó dinero para recolectar artículos deportivos y los dejó para que los hogares los usaran. Los deportes son una excelente manera de compartir tiempo juntos y crecer juntos! Y fue alentador ver a un grupo de jóvenes enfocados en cómo podrían usar sus talentos para impactar al mundo.
Mientras todos los niños estaban jugando y divirtiéndose, tres miembros del grupoo que trabajaron en el campo de la consejería se reunieron con nuestros padres de casa, escucharon sus corazones, sus luchas, su vida real y oraron con ellos. Momentos alentadores que todos necesitamos!
Este equipo cambió rápidamente de de enfoque y comenzó a prepararse para un día de clínica médica como un alcance a la comunidad alrededor de nuestra finca. Varios de los miembros del equipo eran médicos o trabajaban en el campo de la medicina; algunos de ellos son amigos fieles durante años. Visitaron casas y conocieron a muchos de nuestros vecinos antes de que los vieran en la clínica. Luego se asociaron con un dentista y un médico local para ver a casi 200 de nuestros vecinos, atendiendo sus necesidades médicas, dentales y de la vista en un día. Qué alegría ver a nuestros vecinos interactuando con los médicos que han llegado a ellos y se han enterado a través de los años que han estado viniendo!
