“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22: 37-40)
We have owned land in a small village in Santa Tomas for several years now. Our dream was to begin building homes where the children we serve could live in a family setting. It took years to get all of the permits to be able to build. It is hard to put into words all of the obstacles we faced, but in God’s perfect timing, it came together. We are living on the farm with two foster home settings and looking forward to being able to build more soon. A dream come true. This is the La Casa story.
But, there is so much more to a story God is writing out. We have been placed right in the middle of a community. We have so many neighbors. There are so many needs. So we ask ourselves, “How do we live out God’s greatest commands? How do we model and teach God’s greatest commands to the children? How do we live out our faith to our neighbors?”
We have always reached out to our neighbors. It is such a reward to be able to drive down the bumpy country lane to our farm and be able to genuinely wave to our neighbors because we really do know many of them. We’ve visited in their homes; we’ve visited in their schools; we’ve served them through medical clinics; we’ve celebrated Christmas together; and we’ve given many rides out to the highway.
However, we have felt called to invest more into the community. We are in early stages of talking to the community committee that is working to better the community. We want to see how we might partner and stand alongside to help them go further faster. We are looking at medical and dental care, repairing the road, digging water run-off ditches, trash collection, after school homework tutoring and spiritual needs. Yes, there are so many needs, but beginning with coming alongside the local community and what they see as their greatest needs and how they need support in reaching their goals is where we are starting.
Most of our mission teams are out in the community when they visit, so this will help us be able to serve alongside our neighbors in a more intentional way.
It is an exciting adventure to dream and begin to see the community come together for the good of the whole. We are talking to a local university to see how they might be able to become involved. We have a local business that is going to donate barrels for trash collection sites. It seems like interest is stirring and the community is excited. They even raised a little money for some small road repairs by selling pupusas on Sundays.
Would you come alongside us in prayer? Pray for the local community committee, our neighbors and how we might best reach out and come alongside. Pray that we and the children we serve learn how to be good servants. And pray that above all God is given the glory for any possible outcome and that His name rings loud throughout the community.
“Jesús le dijo: Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente. Este es el primero y grande mandamiento. Y el segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos depende toda la ley y los profetas.” (Mateo 22: 37-40)
Hemos tenido como propiedad una pequeña tierra en el pueblo en Santo Tomás desde hace varios años. Nuestro sueño era el de comenzar a construir hogares donde los niños que servimos pudieran vivir en un entorno familiar. Tomó años el obtener todos los permisos para que pudiéramos iniciar a construir. Es difícil poner en palabras todos los obstáculos que enfrentamos, pero en el momento perfecto de Dios, todo encajó. Vivimos en una finca con dos hogares de acogimiento y esperamos poder construir más pronto. Un sueño hecho realidad. Esta es la historia de La Casa.
Pero, hay mucho más en la historia que Dios está escribiendo. Hemos sido colocados justo en el medio de una comunidad. Tenemos tantos vecinos. Hay tantas necesidades. Así que nos preguntamos: “¿De qué manera podemos poner en práctica los mandamientos que Dios?, ¿cómo modelamos y enseñamos los mandamientos más grandes de Dios a los niños?, ¿cómo compartimos nuestra fe con nuestros vecinos”?
Siempre nos hemos acercado a nuestros vecinos. Es una gran recompensa poder conducir por el camino lleno de muchos obstáculos hacia nuestra granja y tener la oportunidad de saludar genuinamente a nuestros vecinos porque conocemos a muchos de ellos en la realidad. Los hemos visitado en sus casas; hemos visitado en sus escuelas; les hemos servido en clínicas médicas; hemos celebrado la Navidad juntos; y hemos dado muchos “rides” hacia la calle principal.
Sin embargo, nos sentimos llamados a invertir más en la comunidad. Estamos en la primera etapa de hablar con el Comité Comunal que actualmente está trabajando para mejoras en la comunidad. Queremos ver cómo podemos asociarnos con ellos y trabajar junto a ellos para avanzar con todos los proyectos y poder ir más lejos. Estamos evaluando la atención médica y dental, la reparación de la calle de acceso, la excavación de cunetas para las aguas lluvias, la recolección de basura, la tutoría después de la escuela y sus necesidades espirituales. Sí, hay tantas necesidades, por esto estamos acercándonos a la comunidad local y estamos evaluando lo que ven como sus mayores necesidades y cómo necesitan apoyo para alcanzar sus metas.
La mayoría de nuestros grupos misioneros visitan en la comunidad cuando vienen al país, por lo que esto nos ayudará a servir junto a nuestros vecinos de una manera más intencional.
Es una emocionante aventura soñar y comenzar a ver la comunidad unirse para el beneficio de todos. Actualmente estamos hablando con una universidad local para ver cómo podrían estar involucrados. Tenemos un negocio local que va a donar barriles para establecer sitios específicos para la recolección de basura. Parece que el interés está motivando a otros y la comunidad está emocionada. Incluso los vecinos levantaron un poco de dinero para algunas pequeñas reparaciones de caminos a través de ventas de pupusas los días domingos.

Oremos para que los niños que servimos y nosotros aprendamos a ser buenos siervos. Y oren para que sobre todo demos la gloria a Dios por cualquier resultado que se logre y que su nombre suene fuertemente en toda la comunidad.
