Early every morning, backpack on her shoulders and a big smile across her face, Dina comes to La Casa’s homeschool room ready to learn. You can see the sparkle of wanting to learn new things in her eyes, with an expectation to rise above and accomplish more.
The UNESCO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, celebrated the International Day of Literacy this month; this year dedicated to women’s rights. In reality, there are 759 million adults that do not know how to read or write in the world; 66% of them are women. Girls represent two/thirds of the 67.4 million children in the world who have never been to school.
This month, La Casa is celebrating with one of our teenage girls her achievements in the area of education. At the age of 14, she had not been to school since she had completed the first grade, years ago. Through individual instruction, she has now completed the requirements needed for her certification for 3rd and 4th grade. This may seem simple to many, but for her, it represents hours and hours of work, study, determination and effort.
After hearing the national anthem, like at any other formal graduation, the rest of the girls were quiet as the representative from the Ministry of Education handed her the certificate. Her mother had been invited to attend the special ceremony. She sat with tears running down her face. Everyone is excited, as this is a step towards success for this talented girl. Dina’s love, dedication, and perseverance has shown fruit.

Cada mañana temprano, con una mochila en sus hombros y una gran sonrisa en su rostro, Dina llega al aula de homeschooling de La Casa lista para aprender. Se puede ver el brillo en sus ojos de querer aprender cosas nuevas, con la expectativa de superarse y obtener más logros.
La UNESCO, organismo especializado de las Naciones Unidas, celebra el Día Internacional de la Alfabetización de este mes, este año fue dedicado a los derechos de las mujeres. En la actualidad, hay 759 millones de adultos que no saben leer ni escribir en el mundo, 66% de ellos son mujeres. Las niñas representan dos tercios de los 67,4 millones de niños en el mundo que nunca han ido a la escuela.

Este mes, en La Casa estamos celebrando con una de nuestras chicas sus logros en educación. A sus 14 años de edad, solo había cursado primer grado. A través de la instrucción individual, ahora ha cumplido con los requisitos necesarios para la certificación de tercero y cuarto grado. Esto puede parecer simple para muchos, pero para ella, representa horas y horas de trabajo, el estudio, determinación y esfuerzo.

Después de escuchar el himno nacional, al igual que en cualquier otra graduación formal, el resto de las chicas guardó silencio mientras el representante del Ministerio de Educación hizo entrega formal del certificado. Su madre estaba presente también como una invitada de honor en esta especial ceremonia, con lágrimas corriendo por su rostro. Todos estaban alegres, compartiendo este paso hacia el éxito de esta talentosa chica. El amor de Dina, la dedicación y la perseverancia han dado fruto.
