Have you stopped to consider how Jesus changed the rules on “giving”? In the Old Testament, the rule was that you give ten percent of whatever the blessing you received…down to spices. That “tithe” was for God’s people to examine what they had been given, offer thanks for the blessing and then to give a portion back that went to care for the priests, the Levites, and those in need.
Then along came Jesus. He upped the ante. Jesus said that tithing had become a rule to follow and had become a game of wanting public recognition for their “giving,” so He challenged the Pharisees to look at giving as an indicator of their heart and to give in secret. And that gift went as far as selling everything one had to be able to meet the needs of those around them…with no credit to them. (Example: rich young ruler) That’s much more than the old ten percent rule. That’s abundant giving! And not only with money, but with time, talents and anything else God graciously blesses us with.
Wow! It isn’t often that we see that kind of giving, is it? But at La Casa, we have the blessing of hosting short term teams who come to serve. Not with an agenda, but with an attitude of “How can we serve you?” This past week was such a team. They gave of their hearts to the children, staff and whatever project was presented to them. They were “all in” from the time they arrived until the time they left. It was a tearful goodbye as they pulled out of the farm and prepared to return home.

¿Se han detenido a considerar cómo Jesús cambió las reglas de “dar”? En el Antiguo Testamento, la regla era que se daba el diez por ciento de la bendición que se recibía… Ese “diezmo” era para que el pueblo de Dios examinara lo que se le había dado, agradeciera por la bendición y luego devolviera una porción que era asignada para el cuidado de los sacerdotes, los levitas y los necesitados.
Entonces llegó Jesús. Cambió las reglas. Jesús puso en evidencia que el diezmar se había convertido en una regla a seguir y se había convertido en una mmuestra de ego, de querer reconocimiento público por su “dar”, así que desafió a los fariseos a mirar el dar como un indicador de su corazón y a dar en secreto. Y ese regalo llegó hasta el punto de vender todo lo que uno tenía para poder satisfacer las necesidades de los que lo rodeaban….sin que se les reconociera nada. (Ejemplo: gobernante joven rico) Eso es mucho más que la vieja regla del diez por ciento. Eso es dar en abundancia! Y no sólo con dinero, sino con tiempo, talentos y cualquier otra cosa con la que Dios nos bendiga.
Wow! No es frecuente que veamos esa forma de dar, ¿verdad? Pero en La Casa, tenemos la bendición de ser anfitriones de grupos de corto plazo que vienen a servir. No con una agenda, sino con una actitud de “¿Cómo podemos servirte?” La semana pasada tuvimos la bendicion de tener un grupo trabajando con nosotros. Dieron de su corazón a los niños, al personal y a cualquier proyecto que se les presentara. Estaban “todos dentro” desde el momento en que llegaron hasta el momento en que se fueron. Fue una despedida conmovedora cuando salieron de la Finca y se prepararon para regresar a casa.
