I was reading this week in John 6 about the followers who ended up deserting Jesus, stating that His message was too hard to understand and accept. In my four years working with the families of the kids in La Casa de mi Padre, I have learned that Jesus’ message IS difficult to understand, and even more difficult to live.

On Monday, Patty and I visited the older sister of one of our boys. She had suffered a bad fall over the weekend and we wanted to see how she was doing. To our surprise, she confessed that the reason for her fall was due to high alcohol consumption. Through her tears, she described her secret battle with alcohol and her fear that she would become like her deceased mother, who had been a severe alcohol and drug addict. She accepted the Lord with us a year ago and has been trying to live for God with her husband and two small daughters. The day of her fall, she had been invited to attend church with a neighbor, but instead succumbed to temptation. Everything in her life is against her living for the Lord, the chains of her past, the destructive family patterns, her difficult economic condition, etc.
It is easy to understand why many of Jesus’ followers deserted Him. It would be so much easier to repeat the same behaviors and not care. My pastor says that the Christian life is not fought, but BELIEVED. Every day we must believe that it is better to follow Jesus than to live in the flesh. I am proud to say that the woman I have written about in this blog has been sober for four days, and tomorrow will be five…

Estaba leyendo esta semana en Juan 6 sobre los seguidores que abandonaron a Jesús, diciendo que su mensaje era demasiado difícil para entender y aceptar. En mis cuatro años de trabajar con las familias de los niños de La Casa de mi Padre, he aprendido que el mensaje de Jesús ES difícil para entender, y aun más difícil vivir.
El lunes, Patty y yo visitamos a la hermana mayor de uno de nuestros varones. Había sufrido de una caída fuerte durante el fin de semana, y queríamos ver como se encontraba. A nuestra sorpresa, confesó que la razón por su accidente fue la culpa del alto consumo de alcohol. Por sus lágrimas, describió su lucha secreta con el alcohol y su miedo de que llegaría a ser como su madre fallecida, quien había sido una grave adicta a las drogas y el alcohol. Aceptó al Señor con nosotros hace un año y ha estado tratando de vivir para Dios con su esposo y dos niñas pequeñas. El día de su caída, su vecino la había invitado a asistir a su iglesia, pero en cambio sucumbió a la tentación. Todo en su vida está en contra de vivir para el Señor, las cadenas de su pasado, las destructivas pautas familiares, su difícil condición económica, etc.

Es fácil entender porque muchos de los seguidores de Jesús lo abandonaron. Sería mucho más fácil repetir las mismas conductas sin cuidado. Mi pastor dice que la vida cristiana no está luchada sino CREIDA. Cada día, tenemos que creer que es mejor seguir a Jesús que vivir en la carne. Estoy orgullosa decir que la mujer sobre quien he escrito en este blog haya estado sobria por cuatro días, y mañana va a cumplir cinco.
