Last weekend, we greeted seven adults from GlobalX ministries out of Atlanta, GA at the airport, eager to engage and come alongside our ministry for the week. There is much written about short term mission trips and teams in the field today. However, our experience at La Casa has led us to believe that the life change we see within team members, the way teams help to launch us further faster and the relationships that are built for the long journey are all positive outcomes that make us continue to host teams.
One of first conversations as we got to know each other on that Saturday evening was about relationships, not any “projects” that would be accomplished or “to-do” lists checked off that they would be able to go home and tell everyone about. Their presence and the way they interacted with staff, children, families and our community was priority. Their presence representing a larger family from back “home” meant the world to those they would be interacting with during the week. Continuing to build and strengthen relationships was their job. And you know what, they tackled it like they were pros.
There are many things we want to share about their week, but we are choosing to share their cumulating activity with you this week….a quinceañera (15th birthday party) they hosted and put on for three of our girls who have turned fifteen this year.
There is much to be debated and discussed around the traditions and meaning behind a quinceañera, but we believe it an opportunity to stop and thank God and to celebrate the lives of each of the girls we have the awesome privilege of walking with for a season of their lives. It’s a time to continue conversations about life and the importance of the decisions we make along the way.
This team raised funds for each girl to be able to choose a special dress and shoes. They decorated the church and foyer that were used for the special service and dinner that followed. They took the time to get to know the girls, their stories, their likes. They participated in the service and served the food. They were servants with big hearts…that left an imprint of love on the girls and the other children in the home.

El pasado fin de semana, recibimos a siete adultos de GlobalX desde Atlanta, GA en el aeropuerto, deseosos de comprometerse y trabajar junto a nosotros durante la semana. Hay mucho escrito sobre los viajes misioneros a corto plazo y los grupos hoy en día. Sin embargo, nuestra experiencia en La Casa nos ha llevado a creer que el cambio de vida que vemos dentro de los miembros del grupo, la forma en que los grupos nos ayudan a avanzar y las relaciones que se construyen para el largo plazo son todos resultados positivos que nos animan a seguir recibiendo grupos.
Una de las primeras conversaciones que tuvimos al conocernos el sábado por la noche fue acerca de las relaciones, no de ningún “proyecto” que se pudiera llevar a cabo o de las listas de “cosas por hacer” completadas que podrían ir y contarles a todos. Su presencia y la forma en que interactuaron con el personal, los niños, las familias y nuestra comunidad fue una prioridad. Su presencia representando a una familia más grande de regreso a “casa” significaba todo para aquellos con los que interactuarían durante la semana. Continuar construyendo y fortaleciendo las relaciones fue su trabajo. Y sabes qué, lo abordaron como si fueran profesionales.
Hay muchas cosas que queremos compartir sobre su semana, pero estamos escogiendo compartir su actividad principal con ustedes esta semana… una celebracion de quinceañeras (fiesta de cumpleaños número 15) que organizaron y organizaron para tres de nuestras chicas que han cumplido quince años este año.
Hay mucho que debatir y discutir en torno a las tradiciones y el significado detrás de una quinceañera, pero creemos que es una oportunidad para parar y agradecer a Dios y celebrar la vida de cada una de las chicas con las que tenemos el increíble privilegio de caminar durante una temporada de sus vidas. Es tiempo de continuar las conversaciones sobre la vida y la importancia de las decisiones que tomamos en el camino.
Este equipo recaudó fondos para que cada niña pudiera elegir un vestido y zapatos especiales. Decoraron la iglesia y el vestíbulo que se utilizaron para el servicio especial y la cena que siguió. Se tomaron el tiempo para conocer a las chicas, sus historias, sus gustos. Participaron en el servicio y sirvieron la comida. Eran siervos con grandes corazones… que dejaron una huella de amor en las niñas y en los demás niños del hogar.
